The Early Cornwall Historical Society
Not much is known of the early Cornwall Historical Society.
A History of Cornwall Houses and Their Inhabitants cites Stuart
Witherell as the
society's founder. The date of founding is
unknown, but estimated at sometime in the mid 1970s. Secretary's notes
from past meetings are currently missing, so
it is difficult to determine the early activities of the society. The
only
records seem to be entries in the Cornwall Annual Report, where the
society wrote one page summaries almost every year between 1985 and
1995. Summaries noted elected officials of the society, frequency of
meeting, and events the society held that year. There is a great deal of
variation in activity from entry to entry. For many years the society was
completely inactive. Other years, however, the group met regularly every
other month. During the more active years, officials were elected. From
these records, a partial list of previous officers of
the society is as follows:
1985
President John S. Thompson
Vice President Maggie Lashinsky
Secretary Doris Severy
Treasurer Margaret Clark
|
1987
President John S. Thompson
Vice President Marjorie Drexler
Secretary Margaret Clark
Treasurer Margaret Clark

1988

Treasurer Peggy Clark
|
1990

Vice President Michelle Schwartz

|
2000

In 1994, after several years of limited activity, the secretary noted
"Once again the Historical Society has been in hiatus. Everyone seems to
have such busy schedules that meetings are hard to plan."
A 1995 entry notes that the society had 18 members. During the latter
half of the 1990s, the annual entries stopped appearing, presumably
because the society stopped meeting.
