Who We Are
The Cornwall Historical Society is a volunteer group interested
in documenting the unique history of Cornwall, Vermont.
Previous community members documented the early history
of Cornwall in detail. It is the historical society's intent to continue
this tradition.
In 1989, the society printed Stuart Witherell's History of
Cornwall Houses and Their Inhabitants, which begins where Rev. Lyman
Matthews' 1862 History of the Town of Cornwall left
off.
Since 1989, the Cornwall Historical Society has seen fluctuating levels
of activity. In the late 1990's the society was completely inactive.
However, late in the summer of 2000, members of the community decided
to reconvene.
When the town's old general store
went up for sale after sitting untouched for nearly seventy years,
concerned Cornwall residents started the historical society up
again to come up with a strategy to preserve the building.
In the months since, over 40 Cornwall citizens have joined the historical
society. The Cornwall Historical Society welcomes all interested community
members. The group meets every other month at the Cornwall Town Hall.
